Lower-PCF Steam
Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions requires action across the entire value chain. In chemical manufacturing, process heat is an important contributor to product-related emissions. Lower-PCF steam helps reduce emissions from steam generation and can contribute to a lower Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for selected BASF products.
Benefits for customers
- Reduce the cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of selected products
- Maintain the same product quality, specifications and performance

What is Lower-PCF Steam?
Steam is essential for many chemical manufacturing processes, including heating, distillation and drying.
At BASF's Ludwigshafen Verbund site, selected Lower-PCF steam offerings use lower-emission energy sources, including biomethane, to reduce emissions associated with steam generation. This lowers emissions from process heat while maintaining established manufacturing processes and consistent product quality.
As a result, selected products manufactured using Lower-PCF steam can achieve a reduced Product Carbon Footprint.
Combining Lower-PCF Steam with Other PCF-Reduction Measures
Lower-PCF steam can be combined with other carbon-reduction measures, such as lower-PCF raw materials and electricity from renewable energy sources. Together, these solutions can further reduce the Product Carbon Footprint of selected BASF products by addressing different emission sources across the manufacturing process.
Reducing emissions from steam generation is one of several approaches BASF is pursuing to support its climate goals and the transition toward lower-emission chemical production.
