Electricity from Renewable Energy Sources
Renewable power for lower-carbon products
Electricity from renewable energy sources is an important lever for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in manufacturing. By using electricity from renewable sources at selected production sites, BASF can reduce electricity-related emissions and contribute to lower Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) for selected products.
Benefits for customers
- Can contribute to lower cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprints for selected products
- Based on renewable electricity sources such as wind, solar and hydropower
- Maintains the same product quality, specifications and performance

What is electricity from renewable energy sources?
Electricity from renewable enery sources is generated from sources such as wind, solar and hydropower.
By replacing conventional electricity with renewable electricity during manufacturing, BASF can reduce emissions associated with power consumption and contribute to lower the Product Carbon Footprint for selected products. The manufacturing process itself remains unchanged, ensuring the same quality, specifications and performance.
Renewable electricity complements other carbon-reduction approaches, such as lower-PCF raw materials and lower-PCF steam, helping to address emissions from different stages of the manufacturing process.
Supporting BASF's transition to lower-emission production
Increasing the use of renewable electricity is an important element of BASF's climate strategy and supports the transition toward lower-emission chemical production.
To secure renewable electricity for its operations, BASF invests in renewable energy projects and enters long-term renewable electricity supply agreements.
Renewable power projects
Examples include BASF's investment in the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Zuid in the Dutch North Sea, one of the world's largest offshore wind farms. BASF uses its share of the renewable electricity generated by the project to supply major production sites such as Ludwigshafen and Antwerp.
In addition, BASF has secured renewable electricity through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). These include an agreement with Ørsted for offshore wind power from the Borkum Riffgrund 3 wind farm in the German North Sea, as well as a long-term agreement with ENGIE for renewable electricity generated from wind and solar parks across Europe.
BASF has also invested in solar power generation, including the solar park at the Schwarzheide site in Germany.
These initiatives support BASF's transition toward lower-carbon production and contribute to securing renewable electricity for BASF production sites.
Availability
Renewable-electricity-based product offerings are available for selected products and production sites. For dispersions and construction additives, renewable-electricity sourcing solutions have been implemented at:
- Hamina, Finland
- Trostberg, Germany
- Heerenveen, Netherlands
For products manufactured in Ludwigshafen, renewable electricity can be allocated to selected product offerings. Availability depends on the specific product and production process.
