Bio-based Solutions

Bio-based solutions are derived directly from renewable raw materials. This approach enables our customers to conserve fossil resources and expand their product portfolios to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers, while also being able to demonstrate the biogenic content of their products.

Benefits of Bio-based Solutions

  • Sourced from biological materials
  • Verifiable biogenic carbon content
  • Conservation of fossil resources
The picture you described shows a close-up view of soil with a small green plant growing on the right side. On the left side, there is a mixture of organic matter such as decomposing leaves and vegetable scraps, partially covered by soil. Overlaid on this part of the image is a circular graphic containing the text "with detectable biocontent 14C."

Unlocking the Potential of Bio-based Solutions

The biogenic content is verified through independent measurement using the 14C method (ASTM D6866-18). BASF offers a comprehensive portfolio of bio-based raw materials, providing solutions for various applications. This enables our customers to prove the biogenic share of their products and develop unique offerings that cannot be achieved with fossil resources.

On the left side, titled "Bio-Based Carbon Isotopes," there is a green leaf graphic symbolizing natural, renewable sources. Below the leaf, a note in green text states that the presence of ¹⁴C is verified using the radiocarbon (¹⁴C) method according to the ASTM 6866-18 standard. This highlights that bio-based carbon contains measurable amounts of radioactive carbon-14, which is typical for recently living organisms. On the right side, titled "Petrochemical Carbon Isotopes," there is a gray oil barrel graphic representing fossil-based sources.
