Lucas Mortier

Institute of Materials Chemistry, TU Wien, Austria

Lucas Mortier is a PhD student at the Institute of Materials Chemistry at TU Vienna. He specializes in the chemical and rheological analysis of bituminous materials. His goal is to understand the microstructural differences in bitumen sources due to aging, polymer modification, and the use of rejuvenators. Lucas has a background in civil engineering and has contributed to numerous research projects focused on rheology and chemistry, specifically binder-scale investigations.

He has presented his work at TRB 2025, RILEM (Delft and Ancona), and PFDM 2025. His work has not yet been published but will be in the upcoming years. Lucas is actively involved in communities such as RILEM, the YAC group, and the Christian Doppler Laboratory in Chemo-Mechanical Analysis of Bituminous Materials. He was also involved in the Knowledge-Based Pavement Engineering (KPE) project.

At the Asphalt Symposium, Lucas will present insights on improving the analysis of bituminous materials using ATR-FTIR and delve into the impact that the refractive index has on the baseline of infrared spectra.
