BASF is investing in its dispersion production sites to meet growing customer demand in EMEA

To meet the growing demand of its customers in the EMEA region, BASF is making targeted investments in its dispersion plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Hamina, Finland. The measures not only increase production capacities and flexibility to secure the supply but also set new standards in terms of sustainability.

Ludwigshafen celebrates 25 anniversary of its largest dispersion plant

This year, the largest dispersion plant in Ludwigshafen is celebrating its 25th anniversary and continues to showcase modern, sustainable chemical production. Supplying a diverse portfolio of products for architectural coatings, construction materials, adhesives, and fiber bonding, it is one of the largest dispersion facilities globally and serves customers across Europe. The plant produces approximately 100 different products under the brands Acronal®, Joncryl® and Luhydran® in bulk size.

The most recent modernization has significantly increased the flexibility of the plant. Production can now respond even more efficiently to different customer needs.

The plant is certified to produce CO₂ reduced biomass balanced products according to ISCC PLUS and REDcert² as well as bio-based dispersions. It can also be powered by green energy. This is complemented by highly automated process control, energy-efficient technologies, pigging technology, and end-to-end digital integration into the BASF systems.

Hamina: Growth for the sustainable fiber-based packaging industry

BASF invests in the future of its Hamina plant in Finland. The modernization of the plant last autumn and the investments starting in autumn 2025 and in subsequent years will increase the capacity and delivery reliability, allowing us also to expand our product range. The plant specializes in paper coating dispersions, XSB and SA binders under the brand names Styronal®, Basonal® and Acronal® to meet the growing demand for sustainable, fiber-based packaging in the Nordic paper and board industry, which plays a key role in the food industry's efforts to eliminate fossil raw materials, such as plastic packaging. In addition, the plant produces XSB binders under the Licity brand for use in Li-ion batteries, serving electric vehicles and other applications.

BASF’s Hamina plant meets high purity standards for food packaging and holds ISCC PLUS and REDcert² certifications, helping customers assess their products' environmental impact and reduce Scope 3 CO emissions. The facility also invests in low-carbon technologies and recycling to support a climate-friendly future.

Reliability and sustainability for customers in EMEA

BASF’s investments in Ludwigshafen and Hamina strengthen its ability to serve customers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, combining technical expertise, local presence, and global innovation.
