Turning end-of-life tires into new resources for decorative paints

BASF and Cromology are advancing circular solutions for architectural coatings by integrating chemically recycled raw materials into interior wall paints – reducing fossil resource use while maintaining high performance and quality.

BASF and the french paint manufacturer Cromology are strengthening their collaboration to bring circular economy solutions to the coatings market. By using BASF’s mass-balanced Acronal® Ccycled® binder, Cromology is now integrating chemically recycled raw materials into its well-established Tollens interior wall paints.

The approach enables the use of feedstock derived from end-of-life tires, which are converted into pyrolysis oil and reintroduced into BASF’s production through the ChemCycling® process. This feedstock replaces fossil resources at the beginning of the value chain, contributing to resource conservation and supporting a more circular materials flow in the coatings industry.

This approach offers a key advantage: the resulting binder has identical application properties and performance compared to conventional formulations, while helping to reduce the product carbon footprint and reliance on fossil raw materials.

The binder is used in the new Tollens Maxiline+ interior wall paint, which is certified according to REDcert². The certified mass balance approach ensures transparency across the value chain and enables seamless integration into existing product formulations.

This development demonstrates how circular raw materials can already be implemented at scale in decorative paints without compromising on quality or processing behavior – an important step for customers aiming to improve sustainability performance in construction applications.

This innovation allows us to combine high-performance decorative paints with a tangible reduction in environmental impact - without compromising on quality or application. It is a concrete step in our ambition to accelerate the use of circular raw materials across our products and contribute to a more sustainable construction ecosystem.
