Paper meets Wine

What is Paper meets Wine?

Paper meets Wine is BASF's showcase initiative demonstrating how the Pulpex paper bottle technology can be experienced in a real-world application. By bottling a wine exclusively selected by the BASF wine cellar in a Pulpex fibre-based bottle, the project transforms a packaging innovation into something people can see, hold and experience. The project also highlights BASF's role in enabling the solution through Joncryl® barrier technology, coating expertise, testing and validation support.

Why does it matter?

The demand for sustainable packaging continues to grow across industries. At the same time, packaging must continue to protect products, maintain quality and perform in real-world applications. Paper meets Wine provides a tangible example of how renewable packaging solutions are evolving to meet both sustainability and commercial performance expectations at scale.

Sustainability benefits of the paper bottle

  • Up to 90% less CO₂ than glass and 30% less than PET
  • Wood fibre from FSC®-/PEFC-certified, renewable sources
  • PFAS-free and without a hidden plastic core
  • Recyclable in the standard paper stream – proven through the CEPI 4evergreen recycling test

What is behind the bottle?

What looks like a simple bottle is the result of years of innovation across materials science, barrier technology, manufacturing and industrial scale-up.

Material Science

  • Selection and optimization of materials capable of meeting engineering specifications and consumer packaging requirements.

Barrier Technology

  • Development of advanced barrier systems, which are assured as recyclable coating solutions to protect different liquid products.

Manufacturing Innovation

  • Creation of a robust, one-piece, fibre molded bottle with a commercial manufacturing process designed for scale production and rapid adoption by industry partners.

Performance Validation

How was it made possible?

Innovation through partnership

Paper meets Wine demonstrates the power of collaboration across the packaging value chain. By combining complementary expertise, the partners transformed an ambitious idea into an industrially viable solution.

Proof it works

  • Global brands and local partners adopting the technology
  • Beverage applications including wine and water have been successfully demonstrated
  • The first industrial production site is operational in Glasgow
  • The technology has been showcased at major customer and industry events

From vision to reality

2019 - 2021

Laying the Foundation

The journey began with a deep-dive collaboration between BASF and Pulpex to explore the potential of fibre-based packaging solutions. This phase culminated in the official partnership announcement, establishing the foundation for a shared innovation journey.

2023 - 2024

Innovation Recognized

Years of collaboration and technical progress were recognized through prestigious industry awards, highlighting the power of partnership in advancing sustainable packaging innovation.

Awards:

  • SCI® Award for Innovation Enabled by Partnership
  • Royal Society of Chemistry: Innovation Through Partnership Prize
2025 - 2026

Scaling for Impact

What started as an ambitious concept became industrial reality. The first Pulpex production line was commissioned in Glasgow, paving the way for large-scale production and commercial deployment.

Paper meets Wine is proof that sustainable packaging innovation is already becoming reality.
